Purina announces factory grand opening

BATAVIA — All eyes are on Batavia this year as its $550 million manufacturing investment inches toward its final phase. Nestlé Purina PetCare prepares to officially open its new Batavia pet food factory this summer.

According to the company’s recent press release, Purina announces that its formal grand opening celebration is a go for August. Company executives, elected officials, community partners, and factory workers will be in attendance to mark the launch of the new building. Purina describes the factory as its most technologically advanced pet food production facility in the country.

The Batavia plant has already begun producing dog and cat food, steadily ramping up distribution efforts as development continues. Located in the heart of Clermont County’s growing industrial corridor, the facility is one of the largest private manufacturing projects in the region in recent years.

For Clermont County residents, the ribbon-cutting signals the arrival of hundreds of jobs, long-term tax revenue for the community, and pride in another national brand choosing the area for its expansion.

Purina says the Batavia site is its first newly constructed U.S. factory from the ground up in more than 50 years. Company representatives view the project as a critical part of strengthening domestic production and modernizing supply chain operations to meet growing consumer demand for pet food products.

The facility currently employs more than 340 workers and plans to expand beyond 500 positions as production increases. Those jobs range from manufacturing and maintenance roles to engineering, logistics, and quality assurance.

Factory manager Mike Ferritto

Mike Ferritto, the Batavia factory manager, said the company sees the site as a model for the future of pet food manufacturing.

“We are looking forward to officially opening the doors of our Batavia factory and celebrating this historic moment for our team,” Mike lauded. “The factory combines world-class innovation with the talented workforce here in Clermont County.”

The factory produces several of Purina’s best-known brands, including Pro Plan, Purina ONE, and Dog Chow. The company distributes these products nationwide, placing Clermont County at the center of a major segment of the American pet care industry.

The investment also reinforces southwest Ohio’s long-standing connection to food manufacturing and commerce. Greater Cincinnati is home to hundreds of food and flavoring companies, creating an established industrial ecosystem that companies like Purina will tap into for suppliers, transportation, and workforce development.

For local officials, the project is another example of how Clermont County continues to attract large-scale employers seeking access to transportation infrastructure and a growing labor pool. Economic development leaders have increasingly pointed to advanced manufacturing as one of the county’s strongest growth sectors.

Beyond job creation, company officials say community improvement is a major focus for the Batavia operation.

Through the Purina Foundation, the company already contributed more than $346,000 to Clermont County organizations and initiatives in the last year alone. Those donations have supported emergency response agencies, law enforcement programs, and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, among other local causes.

The early community investment has helped the company establish relationships within the county even before the factory reaches full staffing levels.

Purina CEO and President Nina Leigh Krueger views the Batavia facility as a long-term responsibility to both American manufacturing and the local community.

“By investing in state-of-the-art manufacturing infrastructure and partnering with committed communities like Clermont County, we’re building a facility that will serve pet owners and their beloved companions for generations to come,” said Krueger.

The Batavia site will become Purina’s 24th manufacturing facility in the United States, further expanding the company’s national production footprint.

Locals have been monitoring the construction of the plant since plans began in October 2020. Large-scale industrial projects often raise questions about the potential changes in traffic around the facility, but supporters of the project have emphasized the significant economic and employment benefits tied to the development.

The project represents broader trends reshaping the region’s workforce. Manufacturing investment has accelerated across parts of southwest Ohio in recent years as companies seek centralized locations and proximity to major consumer markets.

Research indicates that the broader pet care industry has experienced substantial nationwide growth, with Americans continuing to spend heavily on pet nutrition and wellness products. That demand has driven expansion among major manufacturers, including Purina, which has invested heavily in production capacity and supply chain improvements.

By the time the official opening arrives in August, the factory will already be operating at an advanced stage of distribution. Still, the ceremony will formally mark the completion of one of the largest economic development projects in Clermont County in decades.
