BATAVIA — Community nonprofit Do It Yourself Darlin is set to host its first House 101 maintenance workshop in Batavia, partnering with prominent Cincinnati builders Fischer Homes. The organization has scheduled two seminars for residents on July 18 and August 15.

Clermont County is undergoing a period of significant growth. Suburbanization attracts many new families from across the Midwest, driving up overall housing costs in some neighborhoods. According to Redfin, the median sale price of a home in Batavia has increased by 3.8% year over year.

Dry Run, Milford, and Batavia homeowners currently hold the top spending positions for home buying and maintenance in the County. A Clermont Housing Study found that homeowners frequently outsource maintenance services for plumbing, HVAC, and landscaping, despite many households owning their own tools.

The average homeowner sets aside $250-$750 per month for basic inspections and contractors. That’s money residents could spend on other essential needs like groceries, loan repayments, and childcare.

Do It Yourself Darlin is a grant-funded, nonprofit organization founded to help new and existing homeowners care for and improve their dwellings. While professional contractors recommend hiring services for routine structural inspections and repairs, safe and informed residents can potentially save hundreds of dollars a year managing low-risk DIY maintenance.

The organization will be hosting its first “Demystify Your Home” workshop this Saturday. The event will help participants better understand their home’s infrastructure and identify areas that require upkeep.

In partnership with Fischer Homes, qualified technicians will provide a hands-on seminar to help participants better manage their heating and cooling systems, plumbing, electrical systems, insulation, and more. Maintaining these home features can reduce the risk of critical failures and frequent, expensive replacements.

According to the website, attendees will also have the opportunity to tour a new structure’s foundations, framing, and roofing to better understand areas that may be vulnerable to pests and natural disasters.

Founder and Executive Director Annie Darlin Gordon expressed excitement over the upcoming event and encouraged residents to attend, regardless of their income status.

“[Do It Yourself Darlin] is dedicated to making home repair and maintenance skills accessible to everyone through affordable, hands-on education,” Gordon said. “Its pay-what-you-can workshops help homeowners and renters build confidence, independence, and practical DIY skills.”

Gordon also hopes that residents and small businesses will spread the word about this valuable training resource, as it closely aligns with the local leaders’ mission to improve housing quality and development in Clermont County over the coming decade.

Do It Yourself Darlin asks participants not to bring children under 16 to reduce the risk of injury. The organization will provide on-site tools, though attendees may bring their own if they prefer to practice.

The event will take place at Fischer Homes’ Buxton Oaks community in Batavia. Participants must register online to secure their spot. Additional information is available at www.doityourselfdarlin.com.

Empowering Clermont homeowners

Clermont County boasts a high homeownership rate of about 73.6%. Booming neighborhood subdivisions around the I-275 loop are primarily responsible for this result.

The median sale price hovers around $329,000. With large lot sizes and easy access to outdoor recreation, the area offers buyers a blend of country space and city proximity.

Still, recent economic shifts have affected many Batavians’ purchasing power, prompting some to forgo essential home repairs.
